The basic economy, demographics, and social structure and life of the 17th century colonies were based on the production of tobacco which was labored by indentured servants in exchange for transportation to Virginia and, after they arrived, they will be provided with food, clothing, and shelter. Slavery was also common during this century and slaved owners lived in abundance from the hard work of their slaves.
