What evidence do you have about when some metal objects rust?

Rust takes place when metals get corrode. For example: iron surface get corroded in the presence of water and oxygen and form iron oxide (rust).

The evidences are:

Metals gets oxidized, oxidation state increases which results in corrosion.

The strength of the object decreases and change in appearance will occur.
