1) find an equivalent denominator for both fractions.
4 1/3 = 4 4/12
4 3/4 = 4 9/12
2) then subtract like normal
4 9/12 - 4 4/12 = 5/12
The answer:
Nicole put in 5/12 extra cups of milk.

4 3/4 - 4 1/3
= 4 9/12 - 4 4/12
= 5/12 <==== extra cup put in
