The people that built the city of Great Zimbabwe were the ancestors of the Shona people which prospered between the 11th and 15th centuries A.D.

“Zimbabwe” is a Shona name that can mean houses of stone, even though the translation varies. The ruins consist of diverse stone enclosures that have high walls as tall as 11 meters.
