Why did thousands of african americans enlist in the union army and navy after the emancipation proclamation?

African Americans enlisted in the union because they finally had the rights/freedom to do so. The union was fighting to end slavery, so of course they wanted to help fight for their brothers and sisters. Hope this helps you:)
