Assuming you mean the area is 28 yd², equations for the length (y) and width (x) can be written:


y=1+2x\\xy=28

These equations can be solved by a variety of means. One I like is graphing. A graphing calculator tells you the solution is (width, length) = (3.5 yd, 8 yd).
