Prior cases whose principles are used by judges to decide current cases are called precedents.

Precedent is a principle set up in a decided legal case that is either troublesome or convincing for a court when justifying or deciding current cases with the same instances or facts. Precedents are put together and produced in form of books so that it can be used by lawyers to busk their arguments.
