How well received was Christianity in the ancient Roman World- at least up through the end of the 3rd century

Towards the beginning, Rome did not approve of Christianity and even martyred many of the Christians (search up Emperor Nero). However, towards the break up into the two empires, Rome began to accept and even make Christianity their main religion (search up Byzantine Empire).
