Subtract 12 from both sides

x + 12 - 12 = -5 - 12

Simplify

Isolate the x. subtract 12 from both sides


x + 12 (-12) = - 5 (-12)


x = - 5 - 12


simplify


x = -5 - 12


x = -17


x = -17, or (D) is your answer
