The molecular solid tends to have a lower melting points. Considering its properties, the molecules of this type of solid are held together by van der Waals forces rather than by ionic or covalent bonds. Its dipole forces are weaker than ionic or covalent bond. The relatively weak intermolecular forces cause molecular solids to have relatively low melting points of approximately less than 300 degrees Celsius. Molecular solid also tends to dissolve in organic solvents. Thus, most molecular solids are relatively soft, insulators and are characteristically low in density. Examples of which includes water ice, solid carbon dioxide and sucrose/table sugar.
