Geostationary satellites are best suited for this purpose. They circle around the earth in a geosynchronous orbit. This helps them to stay above the earth at a fixed spot. They are about 35,800 km above the surface of the earth. Several weather phenomena can be detected by keeping a vigil at atmospheric conditions.
