That term is known as osmosis in biology. There is also two other types of transport across the cell membrane known as passive transport and active transport. Passive transport is the movement of particles with the normal gradient of the cell. On the other hand, active transport requires the use of an ATP particle (aka energy) and moves particles against the normal gradient of the cell membrane,
