The factors that shaped colonial life in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in America include geography, religion and government. Many of the colonies were close to the ocean which made many to earn their livelihood from fishing, shipbuilding and trade. The climate and soil was also good and many grew cash crops including tobacco. There was also representative government beginning with the Virginia House of Burgesses
