The president nominates people for appointment as federal judges. The nominees are approved by the senate but the president picks the nominees. Federal Judges are appointed for life but can be impeached

Under the system of checks and balances, all branches of the government are able to influence each other and limit each other's actions. The Executive branch, whose power is vested in the President, is able to influence the Judicial Branch by nominating the Justices of the Supreme Court. Following this nomination, the Legislative branch is responsible for confirming or rejecting those nominees.
