Convert: 3 ½ mi = ____ ft.
5280 ft
I'd prefer to use a conversion factor: 1 = --------------
1 mile
Thus,
3 1/2 miles 5280 ft
---------------- * ------------ = 18480 ft (answer)
1 1 mile

One mile= 5,280 feet
Then you multiply that by 3 to get 15,840 feet. To cover that extra 1/2 mile, you divide 5,280 by 2 to 2,640 ft.
Finally you add 15,840 to 2,640 to get a total of
18,480 ft.
