An upright stone that has an incised relief on its surface, such as the maya sculpture (1.2.7), is known as stelae.

The Maya civilization of ancient Mesoamerica, one of the most important and powerful indigenous societies, created the monuments called stelae. They were tall stone shafts which were sculpted in low relief. This stelaes had different styles and several of this stones were recorded where the Mayan used to live. They started producing them in around 400 BC and continued through to the end of the Classic Period.

The stela is the name given to monuments that were designed by the mayan,during the ancient mayan civillization in Mesoamerica. They can be desciribed as tall, sculpted stone shafts and are often associated with low circular stones.
