On June 6, 1944, the Allies landed in France, opening the Western Front of World War II in Europe. Coming ashore in Normandy, Allied forces broke out of their beachhead and swept across France. In a final gamble, Adolf Hitler ordered a massive winter offensive, which resulted in the Battle of the Bulge.
