What was the significance of the development of kepler's laws?

Kepler's laws of motion helped overturn the earlier Aristotelian astronomical system which believed that the sun and planets revolved around the Earth. In order for the older system to work, a complicated mechanism known as "epicycles" was required to make the visible motions match the theory.
