The biggest challenge immigrants to the United States in the 1800s faced is the prejudice and mistrust of the Americans against other races. The First European settlers in particular were seen as either a threat because their skills were creating too much competition, or they were looked down upon because they were uneducated and thus they have no contribution to society.
