As one aspect of overall foreign policy, National Security Policy concerns itself with the defense of the United States against actual or potential future enemies. It was originally intended to protect the independence, sovereignty and integrity of the United States. It was created under the Truman administration, in order to make decisions regarding how to handle the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
