Sympathetic stimulation inhibits the smooth muscle action of the stomach. Stimulation by the sympathetic nervous system will decrease peristalsis by inhibition of smooth muscle in the interior esophagus, stomach, and small and large intestines. The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are the systems that can control peristalsis in the inferior esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines.
