The Islamic expansion in East Africa in 1820's was spearheaded by the Arabs. Numerous Arab merchants and adventurers who were in search for slaves and ivory pressed deeper into the mainland, and little by little they started to intermarry with the locals and convert them into the Muslim faith. Very soon this process made a fertile soil for establishing Muslim states.
