It was a culmination of a century long struggle since the emancipation proclamation

The reconstructions effort did not envisage the political plight of African-Americans in southern states especially after the compromise of 1877. This resulted to a century old struggle with segregation, and inequality which ended in the 1960's after the signing of the equal voting rights act.
