In bodily fluids buffer prevents sudden changes in pH value.

A buffer is a solution that contains a mixture of a weak acid and it's conjugate base or a weak base and it's conjugate acid. This solution is able to absorb hydrogen (H+) or hydroxide (OH-) and therefore prevent the changes of the pH value of the solution.
