Ideologically, the church teachings were presented as the ultimate truths and their word was law for humans. Humanists tried to explain that people should not accept those dogmas and should instead think about things on their own and reach conclusions. In layman terms, it was a fight of dogmatic teachings versus free speech and free thinking, which wasn't readily accepted by the church.
