Separation of Powers

In Federalist Paper No. 51, James Madison elucidated and defended the checks and balances system in the Constitution. Separation of powers is based on each branch of government being framed in a manner that checks the power of the other two branches; additionally, each branch of government is dependent on the people, who are the source of legitimate authority.
