If variation in species were solely a result of genetic recombination during sexual reproduction, how would that limit the evolution of that species?

The evolution of species would be limited to its own genes during sexual reproduction and it could not respond to new diseases, new pathogens, new viruses, and new toxins. Nevertheless, without the mutations, there is no way for immunity to establish through genetic recombination alone.
