The purpose of the Annapolis Convention (1786) was to get rid of trade barriers established between the different US states. At this time, states did not have good trading relationships due to the Articles of Confederation.

Even though these delegates from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Virginia gathered to talk about trade barriers, there discussion became part of a larger discussion about the ineffectiveness of the Articles of Confederation in general. These discussions are the roots of America's decision to get rid of the Articles of Confederation and replace it with a new constitution.
