The variety of species in an ecosystem are necessary to keep the ecosystem in balance and healthy. If any species in an ecosystem decrease there will be decrease in the system's biodiversity apex. The extinction of an apex predator, at the top of the food chain can result in catastrophic consequences for the ecosystem.
