Changing the names was an effort to be patriotic.

Answer:

People in America changed their German cities name to show their patriotism in America. During World War I, many Americans were anger toward the Germans in their country. German was under attack due to widespread public panic and rage at the time during World war I and after. So, the cities council decided to change the names in more American. Some of the names in Ohio changed into Berlin as Woodrow, Bremen as Republic and so on.
