What was Abraham Lincoln's official stand on slavery during the presidential campaign of

So before the civil war Abraham Lincoln focused more about preserving then union than freeing the slaves. Abraham Lincoln did not want to expand slavery but did not want to end it immediately either. Only during the civil war did Abraham Lincoln say he would free the slaves to motivate his troops and also find a better cause in winning the war and getting support.
