B.F. Skinner coined the term operant conditioning

"Sometimes you can accomplish the same thing by punishing bad behavior or rewarding good behavior"

Involves either reward or punishment

The animal must engage in the operation...then that behavior is either rewarded for its good behavior, or punished for its bad behavior
