After WWI, Britain had a huge debt from American Financiers and was in an economic crisis.The British government signed the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922 even though the general population and the Royal Navy objected to it. This treaty put the Royal Navy and the American Navy at the same level, therefore, effectively wending British dominance.
