Poll taxes were a fee that citizens used to have to pay in order to vote. These types of taxes were implemented after black men gained the right to vote during the era of Reconstruction.

Southern state governments tried to use obstacles like poll taxes, as many newly freed African Americans at this time could not afford to pay these fees. These were prohibited with the 24th amendment, almost 90 years after they initially started in the US.
