In order to place a collection of markers onto the respective positions on the genome, gene mapping is conducted.

It is done by collecting blood samples or tissue from family members, either carrier of a prominent disease or not, to isolate, examine and look for particular patterns in the DNA samples.

Since it concerns the genes and the study of heredity, the area of biology concern is genetics.
