How did the nature of the south vietnamese government hamper the fighting of the war?

The dictatorial nature of the southern Vietnamese government made it unpopular to the populace. The common Vietnamese were therefore not supportive of the regime and the USA forces and would better join the Vietcong and the communist forces.
