The first soldier was Trip. Trip was an intimitating man who seemed to come from a rough background. Mr. Rawlens is an olderman who is wise and very kind. Thomas is a free man whose father was also free. He and Colonel Shaw grew up together. Thomas is very educated but is not a very good soldier. The fourth soldier is a friendly and opptomistic man who is proud to fight.
