During the Civil War African American soldiers generally protested in two ways. One way was by going on strike, but this often resulted in a threat of being charged with mutiny. This would normally result in death by firing squad. The second way would be by writing letters to Lincoln requesting equal pay, although this did not happen until June, 1864.
