The corpus luteum develops after ovulation from residual granulosar and the c cells after ovulation. If egg is fertilized the embryo will release the hormone HCG or human chorionic gonadotropin. HCG is very similar to LH and keeps the corpus luteum, producing estrogen and progesterone to maintain the pregnancy. The corpus luteum functions to secrete progesterone. The fate is that it is to be disbanded in the menstrual cycle shut off.
