It was originally known as New Amsterdam under the Dutch. After the second Anglo-Dutch war of 1665-1667, this settlement was surrendered by the Dutch to the English and renamed New York, in honor of the then Duke of York. The English kept the island of Manhattan as the Dutch gave up claim to the rest of the colony.
