Some southern states resisted desegregation by using their state national guard in order to stop these efforts.

For example the governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus, used the Arkansas National Guard to stop 9 African-American students from integrating into Central High School. President Eisenhower responded by sending in the National guard to ensure that these students were able to attend Central High School. He used roughly a thousand troops to help these students attend school.
