Elevated blood glucose (hyperglycemia) in diabetes can cause water and electrolyte imbalance. It happens because the body tries to rid itself of the excess blood glucose by increasing urinary output (more fluid is lost). Increased urination brings to water and electrolyte disbalance. So, people with diabetes have an increased risk of dehydration.
