Sea lions are easily distinguished from seals because they:

I believe the answer is: have external ears

The seals on the other hand, only have small gap in the side of their heat but lack an external ear flap.
The function of the external ears are very similar to humans' , But sea lion's ears have different structures that help them to sustain pressure to protect them when they're diving.
