Which type of rock does A represent?

Metamorphic rock
Rock formed by cooling
Rock formed by compaction
Sedimentary rock

A represents sedimentary rock which comes from previously unconsolidated sediments that are buried relatively deeply within the earth's crust and the water is squeezed out of them in a process called diagenesis and then they are compacted into rock. This could explain a quartz sandstone. A quartzite on the other hand is a quartz rich sandstone that has been subjected to mild metamorphism, as an example.
