Tia owns a fruit shop and is selling a fresh lot of apples and oranges. She wants the ratio of apples to oranges sold to be 4 to 2. Tia wants to sell a total of 42 apples and oranges. How many apples should she sell?

Let

x----> the number of apples

y ----> the number of oranges

we know that

x+y=42 ----> equation A

x/y=4/2 ----> x=2y ----> equation B

Solve the system of equations by substitution

substitute equation B in equation A and solve for y

2y+y=42

3y=42

y=42/3=14 oranges

Find the value of x

x=2y ----> x=2(14)=28 apples
