Biofilms can be formed by a single bacterial species, however they are more often consist of many species of bacteria, as well as fungi, algae, protozoa, debris, and corrosion products. A biofilm may form on any surface exposed to bacteria and some amount of water.

A biofilm is a group of microorganisms where microbial cells adhere to each other on a surface (living or non-living) and produce a matrix of extracellular polymeric substance. For example, biofilms can form on the teeth creating a dental plaque, which can cause tooth decay and gum disease.
