I believe the synaptic cleft is the gap between the axon terminals of a motor neuron and the sarcolemma of a skeletal muscle cell. The synaptic cleft helps to decode the message. When electrical signal reaches the presynaptic ending ,it is translated into a chemical message that then diffuses across the synaptic cleft to the postsynaptic cell.
