A crime scene investigator might study DNA in order to learn what the killer is and if they are on file. Could be many other reasons.

The identity of the person belonging to said DNA. Although in actuality, the lab tech is the person who performs this task. Also so they could find out who is the murder, thief or someone who did the crime but it would it would be sent to a lad re-searcher person to do the actual work to find out who did the crime!
