The southern states economy depended upon mass agricultural output(ie. they sold cash crops like cotton and certain types of rice, harvested by slaves) The North eastern states were largely industrial based, mostly textile or other small and simple products. The Western states(now the Midwest) were the breadbasket of the US, growing crops like corn and wheat and raising livestock.
