Why did Columbus use prisoners as part of the crew? If the ships didn't return, it wouldn't matter. He couldn't find enough sailors. The best sailors were in prison.

Christopher Columbus' crew on his first voyage were experienced seamen from the towns in Andalusia. During this time, the Spanish government extended amnesty to prisoners who would sign up for the voyage. Only four convicts signed up, a man who killed another in a fight and three of his friends who helped him escape from jail.
